What is BIOS SkyBlue?

A proprietary lighting solution created by BIOS, a NASA spinoff, to promote better sleep, better energy, and better health.

How does BIOS SkyBlue work?

  • Research has established that effective circadian lighting should include a “sky blue” (490nm) wavelength, which is found in daylight, but is missing from most traditional LED lighting systems
  • The SkyBlue 490nm wavelength communicates directly with human biology via non-visual photoreceptors in the eye, known as ipRGCs (photosensitive retinal ganglion cells)
  • ipRGCs contain melanopsin, a protein, which, when stimulated by light, sends a signal to the body to reset its cycle for the next 24 hours. This triggers a variety of biological processes, including the production of cortisol for morning alertness and melatonin for a good night’s sleep
  • BIOS SkyBlue optimizes this natural process, without complicated controls, energy-sapping increases in illumination, and uncomfortable color temperature changes
  • BIOS surpasses traditional white LEDs in melanopic content, regardless of CCT

Three Circadian Solutions for a Variety of Applications

Biological Static

SkyBlue Static Spectrum Diagram

BIOS Biological Static LED Light Engines are designed for daytime applications. BIOS Static Biological LED features key BIOS SkyBlue™ (490nm) for maximum daytime circadian impact. Available in 3000K, 3500K, and 4000K, and can be dimmed using a single-channel constant current (CC) LED driver with any standard dimming interface.

  • 3500K LED source with blue spectrum peak emission at 490nm and daytime melanopic ratio (m- EER)* of at least 0.80 or (m-DER) of at least 0.72, CRI 80+ and R9>90.
  • 4000K LED source with blue spectrum peak emission at 490nm and daytime melanopic ratio (m- EER)* of at least 0.90 or (m-DER) of at least 0.81, CRI 80+ and R9>90.

* Melanopic ratios are provided in two (2) formats: They are shown as (m-EER) which is calculated using the WELL v2 methodology, and the corresponding CIE melanopic Daylight Equivalent Ratios (m-DER) are provided as well.

SkyBlue® Static is the ideal replacement for static color light fixtures in applications such as:

  • Senior Daytime Care Centers
  • Outpatient Clinics
  • Offices
  • Schools
  • Factories

Biological Dynamic

SkyBlue Dynamic Spectrum Diagram

Designed to transition from daytime to evening, the daytime CCT includes full BIOS SkyBlue™ (490nm) for maximum daytime circadian impact, and the evening spectrum contains no BIOS SkyBlue™ (490nm).

BIOS Biological Dynamic Light Engines are available in 3000K (dim to 2700K evening spectrum), 3500K (dim to 3000K evening spectrum), and 4000K (dim to 3500K evening spectrum). Simply dim the lights in the evening to remove the daytime SkyBlue wavelengths (490nm) and convert your lights from day mode to night mode. Must be paired with the BIOS Bio-Dimming™ Module which allows intensity and spectrum to be controlled together, via a single channel. The Bio-Dimming Module wires directly to a constant current (CC) LED driver and BIOS Dynamic Biological Light Engines interface with any standard dimming protocol (0-10V, ELV, DMX, Wireless).

  • LED source with 3500K high melanopic daytime spectrum and 3000K low melanopic evening spectrum controlled using a singlechannel driver.
  • Daytime Spectrum: 3500K LED with blue spectrum peak emission at 490nm and daytime melanopic ratio (m-EER)* of at least 0.80 or (m-DER) of at least 0.72, CRI 80+ and R9>90. Evening Spectrum: 3000K LED with maximum melanopic ratio (m-EER) 0.49 or (m-DER) of 0.44.
  • LED source with 4000K high melanopic daytime spectrum and 3500K low melanopic evening spectrum controlled using a singlechannel driver.
  • Daytime Spectrum: 4000K LED with blue spectrum peak emission at 490nm and daytime melanopic ratio (m-EER)* of at least 0.90 or (m-DER) of at least 0.81, CRI 80+ and R9>90. Evening Spectrum: 3500K LED with maximum melanopic ratio (m-EER) 0.57 or (m-DER) of 0.51.

  • Assisted Living Centers
  • Hospitals

  • Offices
  • Schools

Biological Tunable

SkyBlue Tunable Spectrum Diagram

For two-channel control, BIOS Biological Tunable Light Engines do not use a BIOS Bio-Dimming™ Module. In two-channel applications, intensity and spectrum are controlled independently. BIOS Biological Tunable Light Engines with two-channel control can be used with standard 2-channel LED drivers and standard dimming interfaces/protocols (0-10V, ELV, DMX, Wireless). BIOS Biological Tunable White Light Engines are available in 3000K (dim to 2700K evening spectrum), 3500K (dim to 2700K evening spectrum), and 4000K (dim to 2700K evening spectrum).
May also be operated with single-channel control when paired with the BIOS Bio-Dimming™ Module which allows intensity and spectrum to be controlled together, via a single channel. Simply dim the lights in the evening to remove the daytime SkyBlue wavelengths (490nm) and convert your lights from day mode to night mode. BIOS Biological Tunable Light Engines with single-channel control can be used with standard dimming interfaces/protocols (0-10V, ELV, DMX, Wireless).

  • LED source with 3500K high melanopic daytime spectrum and 2700K low melanopic evening spectrum controlled using a singlechannel driver. Daytime Spectrum: 3500K LED with blue spectrum peak emission at 490nm and daytime melanopic ratio (m-EER)* of at least 0.80 or (m-DER) of at least 0.72, CRI 80+ and R9>90. Evening Spectrum: 2700K LED with maximum melanopic ratio (m-EER) 0.47 or (m-DER) of 0.42.
  • LED source with 4000K high melanopic daytime spectrum and 2700K low melanopic evening spectrum controlled using a singlechannel driver. Daytime Spectrum: 4000K LED with blue spectrum peak emission at 490nm and daytime melanopic ratio (m-EER)* of at least 0.90 or (m-DER) of at least 0.81, CRI 80+ and R9>90. Evening Spectrum: 2700K LED with maximum melanopic ratio (m-EER) 0.47 or (m-DER) of 0.42.

Ideal for:

  • Offices
  • Shiftwork
